Earliest meeting: Wednesday 7th April 1852 Final meeting: Wednesday 7th April 1852 Binsey, on the Thames, is located less than 2 miles from Oxford on the opposite side of the River to Port Meadow where Oxford races were staged. In the middle of the 19th century it was surrounded by glorious countryside and steeped in hunting history, with the local Binsey Hunt group in operation. In 1852 they diversified their interest by orgainising a race meeting on Wednesday 7th April 1852 which involved two well rated horses of the day; Harkaway ridden by Holland and The Parson’s Daughter ridden by Sam Darling. The 4 mile course, on the edge of Binsey, was over fair hunting ground, with 30 stiff fences including a brook and a wide ditch. The Parson’s Daughter made most of the running until the final fence, which they met together, but Harkaway got away quicker and maintained his lead to the line. |
